I would like very much to thank CIRC for inviting Willis to speak here today about
the industry and how we can help Chinese companies, whether state- or privately-owned. Our Chairman Joe Plumeri sends his greetings to you on this important
occasion. I am Philip Ellis, and I am Chairman of Willis’ Energy broking business
and Chief Executive of our Group analytics business.
Our industry has traditionally been referred to as ‘insurance broking’, but in fact
we refer to ourselves as ‘risk intermediaries’. There is a critical difference in the
meaning of these two terms: broking refers to our transaction activities, where
we match insurance markets to a client’s particular risk at an agreed price.
As a global broker, we do this in every country in which we work. But our role
today goes well beyond this broking function. Today, Willis and our global broking
peers increasingly advise our clients on how to manage their risks, whether
insurable or not. I would in this talk like to elaborate on this important trend
so that you can decide how a global broker can help your company.
First, let us describe the risk management landscape.
